The original Dodge Viper is a special car -- and today I'm reviewing the 1992 Viper. First I'll take you on a tour of this special Viper and show you all the quirks and features of one of the original Dodge Viper models built; then I'll get the Viper on the road and drive it -- and I'll let you know what it's like behind the wheel of Dodge's modern muscle car, the 1992 Viper RT/10.

You forgot to mention the width of the rear tires! The GTS has ridiculously wide tires, and I assume this one does too

I like how there's so much commentary on lack of features and comforts, It's a Racecar, you don't need any of that stuff, don't see anyone in Nascar complaining about abs and radio 🤣

I'm 30, and I grew up in the 90's being OBSESSED with these cars. I had models of them, I chose them in all the games I played, and I would say such ridiculous things as "Vipers are the fastest cars in the world!"

I remember I saw this car in 1992 in a car dealership on the Santa Monica Blvd in L.A. I was in love with its design and I still am. It was 66'000 dollars back then. Oh... and I bought a small 1:23 model of it from the Glendale Galleria Mall and I still have it right here by me....all these years.

A quick decision, especially in this case, means "We surrender, Burn Loot Murder. Here's the racial scapegoat you wanted to lynch. Please don't burn our houses down or kill us." Mad Max got her way. As did the judge who absolutely refused very reasonable requests to change the venue of the trial and to sequester the jurors from news -- and threats.

No, that's not a bunch of cheap plastic in the interior. What looks like gray, crackle-finish plastic on the dash, doors, and tunnel is actually structural urethane-foam trim-the first on a US-built car. And it certainly is still a fast car even by today's standards, if 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, and even today it's not easy to do 0-100mph and back to zero in just 14.5 seconds.

MOPARman345 HEMI 2 dagar sedan
It wasn't anymore dangerous than the 450hp muscle cars with 5 inch wide bias ply tires in the late 60's and early 70's, the difference is that the Viper was a 400+hp car with no traction control or abs, in an era when everyone was driving 150hp econoboxes that had abs and traction control.

@Mic Dib If you've been around enough cars, you should know what a metal button looks like. Doug was also shocked to find a high beam switch on the floor of an old Maserati. Yes, floor mounted high beam switches are strange now, but they were all like that 30 years ago. A professional "car guy" should have come across that before.

My favorite quirk was the fact that you had to remove one of the rear wheels, if you needed to access the battery. I had to drive a well used ‘94 Viper once, from the dealership to the mechanic. It got really exciting, when the entire shifter came off in my hand, going from first to second. 😳

Working production at Toyota...I have learned you really don't want the first 1000 vehicles that run on a new model line. I don't care what manufacturer, the first ones are what everybody in the plant learn from their mistakes on. For example the first couple thousand new 2020 Toyota Highlanders have thinner metal over the entire chassis than the previous model...so thin that when we put our hand on the side member above the doors to lean over the roof to fix paint defects the metal would dimple enough that most had to be fixed by the metal shop, later on in early production they claimed they increased the metal thickness to strengthen it but we still can't lean with our hand over the truck like we could with the previous model.

For me there is a difference of using cheap materials vs. using simple/functional design and overall lack of features for simplicity. As much as I want to love this former poster dream car I have to say that Lotus made a better job with introducing simplicity to sports cars with their first Elise again.
